Cal to play in the Holiday Bowl

Posted by | November 28, 2006 at 11:33 pm | In Games | 3 Comments

Earlier today, Cal accepted an invitation to play in the Pacific Life Holiday Bowl. This is the team’s fourth straight bowl game appearance, a feat never before accomplished in Cal’s history. The Holiday Bowl kicks off on Thursday, December 28th at 5pm in Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego. While it is yet to be known who the Bears will face, the opposing team will be from the Big 12 conference, most likely No. 22 Texas A&M.

  1. Does anyone know why we get Texas A&M and not Texas? That seems to be the assumption (per ESPN and CNNsi), but I thought the Holiday Bowl got the Big 12 #3, which is Texas (A&M is #4). Any insight?

  2. There’s a lot of speculation out there about why the Holiday Bowl did not select Texas, and I’m not really sure what is true.

One suggestion is that Texas was trying to avoid facing Cal due to idea of the Bears being fired up due to bad blood from 2004 (Mack Brown stole Cal’s Rose Bowl bid with politicking) and the likelihood of the Longhorns losing badly in San Diego.

Also, the HB could have been worried that selecting Texas may not be as lucrative as Texas A&M. Texas fans are coming off a national championship year, and they have been to something like 5 California bowls in the last 6 years. The disappointment and lack of a change could give them a poor showing. Meanwhile, A&M has not been to CA in a long time, and their fans travel well.

In my opinion, if the Holiday Bowl selected Texas and no Texas fans showed up, Cal fans would easily fill the stadium to watch the Bears get payback for 2004.

  3. Eric, another part of it may have been that the Holiday assumed Texas was going to get a better bid. So they could either wait and see to see if Texas would still be available or they could announce A&M now. Particularly when considering all of the caveats like the ones you mentioned (and that Texas is in a tailspin right now), you can see how they made the choice they did.
