Memorial Stadium a scary place for opponents?
Posted by Alex | October 1, 2007 at 1:15 pm | In Uncategorized | 4 CommentsAccording to ESPN’s Bruce Feldman, Cal’s Memorial Stadium is the 10th scariest place to play in the nation.
10. Cal, Memorial Stadium
Autzen Stadium is probably noisier than Cal’s Memorial Stadium, but there is a little magic to this quirky place. Since 2003, the Bears have faced five ranked teams at home and knocked off four, including an upset of USC in 2003 by a then-unranked Cal squad. Of course, Jeff Tedford deserves plenty of credit for that, too.
This mention shows Cal’s growing home field advantage. Though not normally mentioned as a difficult place to visiting teams to play, Cal continues to have great home seasons each year. Hopefully that trend continues this season with USC at home.

this is a joke, right? Anyone get a glimpse at the stands during the game against Louisiana Tech? EMPTY SEATS. Even now, ranked in the top 10, likely headed towards a solid bowl game and even, dare I say, a BCS bowl game, Cal still cannot sell out a home game?
ESPN is just jumping on the bandwagon, hyping up highly ranked teams just to generate enthusiasm for their future broadcasts, because as a long time Cal fan, I know Memorial Stadium isn’t very intimidating.

I don’t think Feldman’s point is that Cal is loud, or even has the most dedicated fans. His main point I believe is that Cal just seems to win at home regardless of anything else.
I have not personally been to the stadium for awhile now, but as of my 2005 season memory, I do agree with you, edgewise, that Cal has some way to go in terms of being an educated, excited crowd.

Memorial Stadium fills up when Cal is playing a high profile game. And people yell. Not as many or as loud as some places, but not empty either.
It’s still a round open shape, so it doesn’t hold noise as well as stadiums like Autzen that are more compact and have a roof over one side.
That said, Cal does seem to do particularly well at home. Maybe the other teams are afraid that an earthquake will make the thing fall apart.
