Cal improves to #21 in AP/Coaches polls
Posted by Eric | September 11, 2006 at 7:10 am | In Ranks/Predictions | 1 CommentWith Saturday’s win over Minnesota, Cal has improved 1 spot in the AP poll and 2 spots in the Coaches poll to end up at #21 in both.
Something to note: TCU, ranked lower than Cal last week, leapfrogged Cal to #20 with a win over Division I-AA UC Davis. So, pollsters have again rewarded a team for a win in a creampuff out-of-conference game, and give little respect to Cal burying a legitimate Big 10 team. This just shows that the Bears still have to prove themselves each game to claw its way back into the top 10.

I thought Minnesota was pretty legit too, but now I’m not so sure. Over the past five years they’ve been nothing but a middle-of-the-pack Big10 team. They win a few and they lose a few. Granted they beat an 11th ranked Purdue last year but Purdue wasn’t nearly as good as everyone thought. As for their 17 game OOC win streak, that is pretty meaningless when you consider who they played over the past five years: Kent St., Tulsa, Colorado St., FAU, Toledo, Illinois St., a mediocre ’05 Virginia, a mediocre ’04 Alabama, Troy, Ohio, Louisana-Lafayette, a decent ’03 Oregon., Texas St., Buffalo, and a decent ’02 Arkansas team. Aside from the ‘Bama, Ark, UO, and Virginia games, the other games were against pretty tasty cupcakes. Props to Minnesota for winning their more notable OOC games but they pad their standings and record with way too many games against non-BCS conference teams.
