WSU game to go untelevised

Posted by | October 10, 2006 at 8:37 am | In Games | 4 Comments

Unfortunately, the Washington State game will not be televised on Saturday despite Cal’s best efforts to get it on air. Washington State was apparently unwilling to move their game an hour (it is their homecoming) to have Comcast broadcast it. Jon Wilner at the Mercury News has more details on his blog.

Looks like this will be another radio game. I believe this is also the second time this season that Cal is the only top 25 team game without any TV coverage. Thanks, Pac-10, for screwing up another one.

  1. Here’s a great post from Jon Wilners blog:

My letter to Sandy Barbour on this subject:
Thanks for all of your great efforts. Rumor has it, despite you setting the table we were unable to get the WSU game TV broadcast. This is understandable….there is little incentive for WSU, and marketing a game on 5 days notice would not generate much $$$$. Problem is, money aside, it is a SHAME. Cal will now be again the only top 25 team without TV coverage. This has been 2/3 weeks. No, this is not your fault, this is the Pac Ten’s fault.

Of course, every other BCS conference has ESPN Gameplan, and ESPN+. WIth PPV options, EVERY conference game is on TV. Why should (is) the Pac Ten different…It makes no sense. With the likes of Jefferson-Pilot, SportsWest and other syndicators, every game has a TV market…and of course we all know that that leads to better ticket sales and marketing and recruiting. To solve this problem, the TV contract needs to be reworked…NOW!

Every week there needs to be at least one non exclusive time slot when the non-network games are played. Then local and syndicates can pick up the games and fans can see the games. In addition, the games are available to the national networks for replays (Think HEISMAN)….

Being a customer (victim) of FSN and its’ pacX contracts over the last decade and one half has been very painful. As a dedicated Cal fan living in San Diego i strive to watch every Cal game I can’t personally attend. Fox has now shunted every pac ten broadcast to FSN Prime Ticket which is not carried by any San Diego Cable provider. So, in case you didn’t realize, there is NO FOX SPORTS NET Pac Ten Games in San Diego! San Diego is Pac Ten country! Prime recruiting space of Cal, Ucla, USC, (Reggie Bush) and the Arizona Schools! Ironically in the early days of the contract, Fox chose to show the Saturday Pac Ten Game oft he week on FX, which at least was nationally covered.

We need to be creative! Comcast is a good start. They at least care! Other ideas are Versus Network, CSTV, USA Network. Furthermore, in addition to the lousy home penetration of FSN in the west, the production quality of the FSN games is horrible.

The buck stops w/ Tom Hansen. He is also responsible for our pathetic bowl lineups and the even worse basketball TV contract. Tom Hansen needs to go. Fox needs to be pressurized to get us up to the standards of the other BCS conferences.

Sandy you were at Notre Dame. I am sure the inadequacies of the Pac Ten TV contract are glaring to you.

You do a great job. Thanks!

  4. The bigger deal to me is why the Pac 10 networks didn’t choose a 5-1 top 10 ranked team against a good 4-2 team? I think maybe ABC and FSN just didn’t want to go up to Pullman, cause this should be an exciting game.

This is what we get on TV:
    UCLA at Oregon 12:30 p.m. ABC *1 / ESPN-GP *2
Oregon State at Washington 3:30 p.m. FSNNW / FSNAZ
    Arizona State at USC 7:00 p.m. ABC (HD) *1 / ESPN-GP *2

I understand that USC is always going to be on TV, but couldn’t we at least get the Cal/WSU game on FSN Bay Area?
