Hughes, Jackson AP All-Americans

In their yearly All-Americans list, the Associated Press selected Daymeion Hughes as a first-team cornerback, and DeSean Jackson as a first-team all-purpose player. Cal was the only Pac-10 team with two selections on the first team, with one player from each USC and UCLA being selected.

  1. Rather than post a third All-American topic, I’ll just comment here that both Daymeion Hughes and DeSean Jackson were also selected for ESPN’s All-American list, at cornerback and punt returner respectively.

    Daymeion Hughes

Hughes didn’t get the publicity that top cornerbacks who played to his east got. But he did get more interceptions — eight, which put him third in the nation. He also returned two of them for touchdowns and led the Pac-10 in passes defended with 19. That’s an indication of his speed and his ability to break on the ball. It’s especially impressive when you consider that the smarter quarterbacks tried not to throw to his side of the field.

    DeSean Jackson

    California | PR

Rare is the blue-chip recruit who turns out to be every bit as good as advertised. The sophomore who waited until signing day 2005 to choose his college selected the Bears over USC in order to have fewer hurdles to leap en route to stardom. Smart move — Jackson tied tailback Marshawn Lynch for the team lead in touchdowns with 13. But check out how Jackson scored them: nine receptions and four (four!) punt returns. He led the nation in the latter with an average of 18.2 yards. He’s the closest thing to Reggie Bush we have these days.
