  1. Cal and Tennessee must have had the two biggest roller-coast rides in the polls throughout the season. Look at their week-by-week rankings:

weekly AP rankings (weeks when Cal was higher than Tenn are bolded):
    Cal 09 22 22 21 22 20 16 10 11 12 10 08 17 22 21 20 14
    Tenn 23 11 11 13 15 15 13 08 07 08 08 13 22 19 17 17 24

    Weekly changes:
    Cal -13 0 +1 -1 +2 +4 +6 -1 -1 +2 +2 -9 -5 +1 +1 +6
    Tenn +14 0 -2 -2 0 +2 +5 +1 -1 0 -5 -8 +3 +2 0 -7

    total movement:
Cal 55 places; net change: no. 9 to no. 14
Tenn 52 places; net change: no. 23 to no. 24

  2. Interesting data, Kent. It really was a roller coaster for the two programs.

  3. I’ve just been looking again at the AP rankings for Cal and Tennessee and think I may have understated their roller coaster ride. After their first week game, Cal took the biggest one-week drop (-13 places) and Tennessee had the biggest rise (+14) of any teams during the week, and perhaps during the entire season. In the final poll, Cal had the biggest rise (+6) and Tennessee the biggest drop (-8; my previous figure was wrong) of any teams. I don’t know what it all may mean, but it sets up next season’s opening game between Cal and Tennessee nicely.
