Training Center construction put on hold
Posted by Steve | January 29, 2007 at 12:28 pm | In Facilities | 7 CommentsEarlier this morning, a Judge issued a preliminary injunction temporarily preventing the construction of the training center next to Memorial Stadium. While tree-sitters have been protesting mainly to save the oak trees in the area, the legal basis for their argument is violations of the Alquist-Priolo Act, a state law which prohibits new buildings on earthquake faults. Multiple fault tests had been taken, and while most of them came back as being safe, two of them were inconclusive.
This is a huge hit to Cal football, as construction will now have to be delayed a year, if not indefinitely, as the trial will not begin until this summer, and starting construction directly after then would interfere with the 2007 Football schedule. While an appeal to the injunction is being considered, school officials are confident that they will win out in court if the issue ever even makes it to trial. Let’s hope that the stadium plans eventually get approved, and does not have much affect on recruiting or even Tedford’s long-term plans on staying at Cal.
EDIT by STEVE: 1/30/2007- At least for now, it appears that we don’t have to worry about Tedford getting frustrated and leaving:
“Anybody who’s asking those questions is very uneducated to my feelings to Cal and this program,” Tedford said. “My commitment is unwavering. My commitment is 100 percent to Cal. I’m not panicking. I’m not fazed by this at all.
“I want those statements to be clear to our players, our recruits and anyone else who is wondering.”
In Tedford’s new contract, however, there have been no changes from the previous one regarding the stadium plans. The UC, confident that the stadium plans will eventually be approved, are moving ahead with the bidding process and any site preparation that the injunction may allow. With signing day only a week away, hopefully this confidence will be enough to sway any borderline recruits that may have been put off by the injunction and current state of the training facilities.

My God dude, I love what you have to say. I feel the same way. Look man, there are tons of Cal Blogs out there, why don’t we start to take this fight to the hippies? We need to expose the lies they spin and we need to expose the rich land owners who are screwing everything up. Our voices alone mean nothing, together we can make things right!

these are the moments when I am proud to be your roommate :-)
While I do love this city, sometimes it frustrates me that anything anyone tries to go will get public protest – they are just trees, life will go on.

Seth, I’m pretty down to go and take down those hippies. We just need to mobilize the few thousand (obvious low estimation) or so fans in the area.

That is key, and the plans of mobilization are already in the works. It will take time, but then time is all we have, now. We have to collectively collaborate on this, just like the hippies. I just hope we are able to do something before Tedford bolts, cuz this ship is sinking and fast!

I hope they do build the new facility because if they don’t there will be no good recruits and Tedford might go. Good thing that our 2007 recruiting class looks pretty good but in the future if Tedford is gone, our recruiting class is going to drop. I am a season ticket holder and if that happens I am going to go for the San Jose Sabercats!!!!!!

I don’t see any need for hippy bashing here. Everyone knew that this was going to happen as it is a part of any major development project. You’re not going to get results by saying ‘who cares about trees’ or ‘the hell with the hippies’. You WILL get results by saying ‘we’ll plant 3 trees for every 1 that must be removed’ as the UC has done. As I see it, all they have to do is more due diligence regarding the seismic studies.

Let us hope you are correct Felliz, for all parties involved, especially for the hippies sake.
Really though, can we ever forgive the hippies for costing us a year of construction time and an additional 10 million dollars minimum? I think not! Someone damn well needs to be held to account! They are not going to get to scatter back to the bushes this time, no they need to stand and let the public see who they really are!
Their ties to the special interest land lobby in Berkeley will be uncovered for all to see!
