Big Game thread

The Bears must regroup, overcome injuries and inconsistency, and come on the field with inspired energy. I want to see the team determined to wreck havoc after a disappointing season. Blowout the Furd, please. Go Bears.

SF Chronicle: “Saving the season”

For Cal, this season’s version of the Big Game is about more than a 110-game, tradition-filled rivalry.

It’s about making a nationwide statement or the realization that there is no way to salvage a season that started with such promise and could end without a bowl berth. Seemingly, there’s no in-between, and there are starkly differing reactions coming out of the Cal camp this week. …

“We’ve got to clean up the offense and do something about it or the season is going to go to” pot, senior receiver Robert Jordan said. “Early in the season, we were exploding on people. We weren’t just playing to keep it close. We were trying to blow people out of the water. We’ve got to get back to doing that.”

Bruce Feldman: “Picks”

Cal 28, Stanford 10: Coach Jim Harbaugh’s crew is a scrappy bunch, but they don’t have enough athletes to cope with the kind of speed Cal will throw at them. Coach Jeff Tedford is 5-0 against the Cardinal. He’s also covered the spread in four of those five.

SJ Mercury: “These days, Big Game is anything but”

On the silver anniversary of “The Play,” the Big Game has become virtually irrelevant. Sure, it means something to fans of both schools, although not as much as it used to. But beyond its significance to some Old Blues and longtime Cardinal fans, it’s a fading blip on the rivalry radar. …

Basically, the Big Game is caught in rivalry hell: One team is always bad, the other good – but not good enough to have a major bowl bid on the line.

And is the Big Game really the game for Cal these days? My sense is that Old and Young Blues alike would much rather beat USC than Stanford. Stanford is more pest than worthy challenger. The Big Game has lost significance to Cardinal fans in recent years, too, largely because of their school’s awful on-field product.

SF Chronicle: “Big Game not just a passing fancy for QBs”

“I feel like a lot of the team’s disappointments are my fault and are very obvious,” Longshore said. “I feel responsible for the losses. I haven’t played nearly as well as I wanted. I haven’t played nearly as well as I’m capable. At the same time, I’m excited about getting better.” …

In some regards, Longshore has to repair what has transpired this season. After a 3,021-yard, 24-touchdown showing during a 10-win season in 2006, he’s gone for 2,292 yards and 15 scores during this 6-5 season.

Building up a 5-0 start, he completed 63.8 percent of his passes for 1,137 yards and seven touchdowns with two interceptions. After missing one game with a right ankle sprain, Longshore connected 57.2 percent of the time for 905 yards and five touchdowns with eight interceptions in his next five starts.

  2. Four personal fouls, the guys don’t look like they’re playing with much heart besides Forsett of course. Come on, pick it up Bears!

  3. Agreed, these penalties have to stop for Cal to win this one.

  4. looks like the team’s given up. this is so, so painful to watch. I can’t believe we’re giving the Axe back..

  5. The penalties are inexcusable, but why is Longshore still in the game? Where did Forsett go in the 2nd half? That’s the story of the CAL season. A totally unproductive second half after 252 yards in the 1st half. Tedford, get your head out of that play card and do some coaching!! Or get a new card with plays that work!!!!

  6. Here’s to 2008! Hopefully next year we can have a quarterback who actually has some confidence in his abilities and isn’t throwing interceptions near the endzone in the final minutes of the game or constantly rushing the ball. It is also quite sad that so many injuries have plagued the team these past few weeks. I have been a die-hard Cal fan practically my entire life and it is really disappointing to see such a talented group of players have their season collapse like it did. I know Tedford will be able to turn the team around next season and reclaim the axe that Cal deserves. Go Bears in 2008!!!

  7. What a collapse – Tedford blew the season and Longshore simply blows :-(

  8. It’s amazing how I can predict when Longshore will throw another interception to lose yet another close game for us. Actually it was relatively easy since he does it so often. However, I am not actually mad at Longshore anymore, because I know he doesn’t have the skills or what it takes to win close games, I am more mad that Tedford keeps him in the game despite history repeating itself so many times.

  9. Besides for the fact that I think Tedford left Longshore in too long in too many games, I do not think it was Tedford who blew the season. Longshore is not a good quarterback and has zero confidence in his abilites ever since he hurt his ankle. I get so frustrated when he constantly gives the ball off to Forsett and settles for a few yards if any in gain. I think Longshore’s lack of conifdence in his throwing abilites has really cost the team.

  10. collapse complete. lost 6 out of the last 7 games. sigh.

  11. In response to #9, I absolutely think it was Tedford who blew this season. There is no reason for CAL to lose to Washington and Stanford with their players. Not to mention UCLA. Remember it was Forsett’s running in the 1st half that let Longshore throw that TD pass to Jordan. How do you explain the fact that Longshore could only lead CAL to 3 points in the second half? Why was Riley warming up and not in the game? Stanford used a 2 quarterback system today and Urban Meyer let his team to it last year. To a National Championship nonetheless. Anyone who does not believe the collapse this season is due to the coaching ineptitude of Tedford and his staff, is just like Tedford when he says there is not much wrong and they just have to pay attention to details. Hey coach Ted, we’ve lost 6 of 7 and the axe!!! Is it time to make some changes yet?

  12. I am so sad for this season. What happened to our Bears? What happened to Tedford?

  13. I’m disgusted with the way the bears played over the last 2 months.

    Longshore is TERRIBLE!!!!!!

Maybe he’ll go on his mission next year instead of torturing us with more 4th quarter interceptions.

    He STINKS!!!!!

    Go Bears in 2008!!!

  14. Nate “Lowscore” BlOWS!!!!

He’s more concerned about his hair dye each week then winning.

Does anyone know what his career TD to Interception ratio in 4th quarter is now? I think it’s got to be 1 TD to 12 INTs. What a joke!!!!

Here’s to “Big Game” Nate. You SUCK!!!!

    I’m just glad he doesn’t play Hoops…

BTW….Cal Hoops looking better then I expected.

    Go Bears!!!
