QB, news from Fort Worth
Posted by Eric | December 30, 2007 at 6:03 pm | In Offense, Players/Alumni, Quarterback | 32 CommentsFirst thing: Coach Jeff Tedford made it clear that all positions will be open come spring, specifically the quarterback position (including freshman Brock Mansion). Tedford said this about the competition:
Asked to define compete, Tedford said: “It’s going to be wide open to compete for all positions.” Junior Nate Longshore is the two-year incumbent – and would be a three-year starter if not for a broken ankle in the 2005 season-opener – but he has struggled in comparison to his sophomore numbers. …
“Oh yeah, there’s going to be competition (at quarterback),” Tedford said. “Last year, (the young quarterbacks) really hadn’t been in our system. Now, there are guys in the system, and they’ll all get a chance to play in the springtime.”
Though Tedford hadn’t said publicly that any position would be open in the spring, he apparently announced the decision to the team after its loss to Stanford in the regular-season finale.
He had these words to say about Mansion:
“He has a lot of talent and has a bright future,” Tedford said. “He’ll compete, there’s no question about it. He’ll have an opportunity to compete in the springtime.”
In other news, WR DeSean Jackson and Robert Jordan, and FS Thomas DeCoud will not start the bowl game due to a violation of team rules. Jon Okanes reports:
Tedford didn’t elaborate but said it wasn’t a major violation. He said the three players still will play but didn’t know how long they would stay on the bench at the beginning of the game.
This doesn’t sound very serious, but I thought it might be worth mentioning.

looks like you posted too early. 28-27 cal now in the third =)
2. Comment by Steve — December 31, 2007 @ 12:04 pm #
make that 35-27 cal in the 4th. with carney out of the game for AFA now and the defense reading the triple option well, looks like its gonna be a tough struggle for AFA to come back in this one.

wow tedford finally came to his senses and put riley in the game! my only question is what took so long? i still think tedford’s decision making and play calling is extremely suspect, but he is doing a good job recruiting.
4. Comment by Calman — December 31, 2007 @ 1:01 pm #
it seems pretty obvious to me that riley is a much better quarterback. i just wonder why it took tedford so long to notice that. it also makes me wonder how good kyle reed could have been for us considering he was just as highly touted coming out of high school as riley. all i know is that nate longshore better not take a snap next year.

GO BEARS!!! nice comeback after being down 21-0 early.
6. Comment by JT — December 31, 2007 @ 1:08 pm #
I’ll have to admit that when I heard it was Riley, not Longshore starting against Oregon State, I didn’t feel good about that. But after watching Longshore against UCLA and ASU, I couldn’t understand why Tedford wouldn’t go back to Riley. After all, were it not for his blunder, Riley would have led CAL back to beat the Beavers, after Tedford had a horrible goal line series AGAIN, and could not get CAL into the end zone in 4 downs!!!
I wouldn’t crown Riley yet, but I’d have to say that Longshore will have a very difficult time proving himself to regain the starting job next year.
Great job today- Go Bears!!!!!

Crown him JC, Crown him now, the fact is that Riley in 3 minutes against Or St did more and showed more ability to lead a team from behind, than Longshore has shown his whole career. Yes Tedford needs to answer questions as to why Riley was not playing sooner. It is painfully obvious that he inspires the team to play better, heads are held high when he is in, they are fired up about playing football. He throws a much nicer more accurate ball, almost every catch seemed effortless hitting guys in stride or at their numbers not suicide passes or balls in their feet. He has more mobility and overall he seems like a winner. Ask yourself this question Levy or Ayoob? That is the same comparison, except I believe Riley will start on Sundays, he is 6-3 230 with a cannon, no excuses Tedford needs to man up and say he f’d up and should have been playing Riley since the end of the UCLA game.
8. Comment by Terry — December 31, 2007 @ 1:37 pm #
Thank god Longshore got out early. Kevin Riley did a fantastic job today! After he took the first snap in the second quarter, the resulting touchdown occurred about a minute and a half after the snap! Amazing! Excellent passes made to Jackson, Hawkins, and Jordan helped the Bears score. Riley used those receivers like they should have been used all season!! Tedford says the QB position will be open next year but Riley looks to be the clear choice in my mind. Great comeback by the Bears and looking forward to a great season in 2008 with Riley starting at QB! Go Bears!!

well, we’ll see how/if any of the QBs improve over summer camps. plus, you can’t rule out Brock Mansion… =]
10. Comment by Steve — December 31, 2007 @ 2:16 pm #
The performance by Riley today was stellar! I knew he had a gift, despite the Oregon St. loss and he displayed his gift fully today. I see a player who can scramble like Jeff Garcia and has the accuracy of Aaron Rodgers. He has a very powerful arm; reminding me of John Elway or Dan Marino in their early days. When you have a quarterback as young as Riley, with an arm that strong, who can scramble and who is not afraid to run; throwing that football with precision like a bullet, Tedford has a chance to develop a Pac-10 star and a true N.F.L competitor. What an athlete. I’m very proud of the Cal football team. See you all next season at Strawberry Canyon and have a pleasant 2008! Go Bears.
P.S.- Terry I couldn’t agree with you more…great post!
P.P.S- JC, what does Riley still have to prove? I say crown him, he wants to win and he has redeemed himself. He’s only a freshman…with all of that talent. An underclassman who played today like a 5th year senior!
11. Comment by C. Neal — December 31, 2007 @ 2:30 pm #
I think that the best comment we will see from Tedford will be that it is “wide open”. Anything more would be an admission that by not benching Longshore earlier he destroyed a promising season.
His comment after the game about Riley’s performance -‘He kind of had the hot hand,’ Tedford said. ‘We felt like he had a pretty good feel for it, so we just left him in.’- does not do justice to the performance he put in. At least the people who selected the game MVP saw what he did. One other thing of note was the way the defense reacted to a dismal first quarter. I am far from a Coach Gregory fan but he did a nice job adjusting. I guess he should stay for 08 if only on a probationary basis. Go Bears in 08.
12. Comment by CJ — December 31, 2007 @ 3:46 pm #
did anyone else catch that appalling stat regarding longshore’s fourth quarter incompetence? over his career, nate has thrown one touchdown and 13 interceptions during the final stanza. shocking.
13. Comment by new yorker — December 31, 2007 @ 4:36 pm #
Nice to see everyone getting on board the Riley bandwagon now. I’m not saying he has anything else to prove, but Riley came into the season an unknown and everybody was probably scared when he came into replace Longshore. When he made the mistake against OSU, people came down on him and backed up Tedford for going back to Longshore the next few games because he was a better “manager†of the game. Until Longshore continued to look horrible.
“F*** the manager,†that’s what I say. Tedford and Longshore managed us out of the Axe and a better season. After today’s performance, Tedford won’t ever admit it, but Riley showed us how good he is and how Coach Ted screwed us this year. The loss against OSU was as much Tedford’s fault as Riley’s. Poor play-calling with 1st goal and CAL gets nothing, so we lose by 3. Riley almost saved your butt Tedford.
So I say let him have a shot next year, but when I say don’t crown him, give Mansion a chance too. For all we know he may even be better. Tedford kept #13 hidden all because of his loyalty to #9. Let’s hope he doesn’t do that next year. And if Riley is the best, let him start. Please!!!
14. Comment by JC — December 31, 2007 @ 6:23 pm #
I actually believe that stat is not accurate and its closer to 1 and 16. I have to say that its really not all that shocking, all one has to do is recall the last two years of Longshore and come to understand that he has cost the team numerious games. UofA 06, USC 06, UCLA USC and Stanfurd of this year, but what is worse is that it appears following the UCLA game a lot of the team felt like Longshore was not the guy to get it done. Rumors of this have been circulating for weeks, and while I strongly believe JT needed to assert his authority by making clear he was the only one making decisions regarding starters, one must ask how long can you cut your nose off to spite your face. This is why I strongly believe that one JT should explain himself, he will not do that I am a realist. Second I think he should get one more year either he gets Cal in the National Championship or the Rose bowl, if he fails to accomplish those goals then after 7 years its time to let him go. Fact is looking at the schedule the even years are a lot easier. The toughest road game is USC, perhaps Wazu if the weather gets freaky, take that bake Wazu is 2nd game of the year, UCLA at home Ducks at home, Or St who beats us at home and we crush in Corvalis, UofA trap game in the Desert but it is following a bye week, Stanfurd at home, When you really look at there is no reason they should not win every game at home with Michigan St being the toughest test on opening weekend. Away games across the country are always tough and from what I hear MD can be a tough place to play, and USC. I just want to say this now if we end up in the Holiday bowl, its not because Tedford is amazing its because every two years our schedule gives us the Holiday bowl, do not be fooled by what is an easy Pac-10 schedule with all the big boys in Berkeley.
15. Comment by Terry — December 31, 2007 @ 6:25 pm #
JC totally agree with statement that if Mansion is better play him, but I have to say following Riley from Recuriting till now he if continues to progress he will play on Sundays. He was by far the best football player in the state of Oregon coming out, Reed left after camp because he knew he could not compete with Riley. I must say I do agree a lot of people are jumping on the Riley bandwagon, I am not one of those I started driving the wagon following the UCLA game, not to make myself out to be a genius but the truth is I have seen patterns in Tedfords teams that are painfully obvious over his tenure, the not scoring from 1st and goal inside the 10 is not knew, I was in the endzone when he threw it four times against USC in 04, I saw it that year in the holiday bowl, and I am strong believer that if your O line does not get you 1 yard you do not deserve to win. That being said I was calling for Levy to play last year after the U of A game, why because he was not the better arm, or the smarter guy or the better manager, but because he was a winner. Plain and simple, I want the guy who inspires his team to win, who makes everyone play better, and Levy did that and so does Riley. Following the Or St game everyone was all pissed at Riley, I actually saw him as the future he showed more in that game then Longshore has ever shown, and Today he was near perfection in fact under the NFL QB system he would have had a perfect passer rating. And just to point out as a side note, there has been a Facebook group for several weeks going back to the USC game, it probably should have been created earlier, called the We Want Riley Movement, some people have been on top of this for awhile.

While I think that Riley screwed up during the OS game, his performance up until that point was solid. Kick him in the butt for his error in judgement then let him lead Cal to a solid season.
While I doubt that Call was really in the top 5 at any point in the season they should have ended in the top 10 instead of unranked. Happy new year to everyone.
17. Comment by CJ — December 31, 2007 @ 7:38 pm #
I agree that if tedford cant get us to a rose bowl after 7 years it might be time to let him go, but he is getting good players to come to Cal when they have some of the worst athletic facilities in the conference, which is a huge feat in itself. Cal football was in the cellar for a long time before he got here and people need to keep that in mind, myself included. At the same time though, I do believe that some sort of personal bond between he and longshore kept him from putting riley in earlier this season, which is something I don’t think fans should be okay with.
18. Comment by Calman — December 31, 2007 @ 7:47 pm #
I do not think that facilities are as big a deal as people make it out to be. Yes we need the upgrade, yes it will help with recruits but was it facilities that made Desean Jackson choose Cal over USC, obviously not. As for the issue of pre tedford with tedford I will make the same argument I have made before.
I will now list the pre Pete Carroll USC stats and the current Pete Carroll USC stats.
Pre 1996-2001 37-35,
With Carroll 2001 6-6
with Carroll after 2002-present 11-2 Orange bowl win, 2003 12-1 Rose Bowl Win, 2004 13-0 National Championship Orange Bowl second straight naitonal championship, 2005 12-1 Lost Rose Bowl, 2006 11-2 Won Rose Bowl, and 2007 10-2 likely to win Rose Bowl.
That is 6 straight BCS games, coming off his first season of 6-6, and the previous five years being the 2nd worst in USC history, in fact if you do not count the first year of carroll at USC his record in the last 6 years is 69-8, he is 75-14 overall in 7 years.
By contrast lets look at Tedford, who I love dearly, he has one co-pac-10 championship, which we all know is BS, having lost to USC. His record is 49-25 over his 6 years at Cal.
Again I love the guy, yes we give him one more year, but by year 7 of the Pete Carroll years USC had won 2 national titles and been to 6 straight BCS games. That coming off a 6-6 season.
We must stop using the excuse that we were horrible before Tedford as a reason to achieve our main goal every year. That goal is the Pac-10 and the Rose Bowl. Fact is that if continue to use the crutch ” Look what we were before” and ” We will get em next year” We will never get em next year.
So I am done with the Cal tradition of saying good try, and look how bad it could be.
Has Tedford done wonders yes, but if every year your goal is Pasadena and you are 0-6 that is 6 straight failing seasons.

I’m not sure who is riding on the Riley bandwagon because it is not me. I’m not a Cal fan I’m a Cal student and I saw a lot of talent in Riley, even in the Oregon State game. He should of seen playing time after Longshore’s injury…what a shame. I really hope the Cal football team pulls things together for the 2008 season. To all of you it has been fun and I wish every one of you a wonderful 2008.

Nate WHO ?
Seriously, after the Oregon State game my 10 year old son said Riley should start more,or perhaps platoon with Longshore. The fact that Riley never saw action in the Stanford game is probably a contributing factor in the loss. Stanford used two quarterbacks and each brought a different attack against the Bears. Bob Gregory, kudos for the halftime adjustments. It seemed so many times in the latter half of the season Cal came out for the second half and continued to try the Forsett-Jackson attack and the same defensive formations and schemes, not mixing in the tight ends, the fullback, other recievers, etc. And Rulon Jones, great to have you back in the line up. Anybody besides me worried about Thompson as a corner next year? He got burned bad two years ago against Tenn, looked weak at times this year. I’m not sold on him…
21. Comment by Pete Maloney — January 1, 2008 @ 2:37 pm #
Syd will be fine, you need to look at the whole Defensive situation when looking at Cal secondary players because they are in a very different situation than every other secondary in the Pac-10. First Syd is not Deion Sanders, in fact no one in college football or the NFL is the type of CB Sanders is, so I do not expect anyone to shutdown a grid about 25 yards wide. Yes he got burned at Knoxville, but if you look at the plays he got burned on it was because he tried to tackle a guy with one hand, he did not get burned over the top, and he was playing with a cast on. He improved last year and this year, I think he will be fine next year. The real reason the Cal Secondary is always questioned is because unlike every other defense in the Pac-10 they have decided to play the bend dont break. Now everyone has there own strong opinion on this defense, I myself am not a fan, but I am not a fan because it does not work with the players Cal has, by that I mean it does not work because Cal does not have a pass rush. Did anyone see the Sugar Bowl last night, UHaw was made to look stupid, here is a team that only passes, and they played a team that decided to play Bend dont break, there was 8 sacks in that game some great timed blitz but a lot of them from the front 3, yes front 3 the dawgs rushed 3 and 4 guys and still put Brennan on his back, that means they dropped 8 guys in to coverage. What this all means is that yes the Bend dont break works if you have a pass rush. Cal in 04 had a superior Pass rush with Ryan Riddle and they had the best overall defense Cal has had under Tedford. The scary thing, and the thing I dont understand is why Cal is not out there recruiting a bonfide pass rusher, nothing what so ever. Great more wideouts and tight ends and OL, picked up another DB, and another LB, but nothing on the DL. Fact is the DL is as important to a D as the OL is to the O. What is worse is that even in Cals worst years they usually had great DE, Carter comes to mind. If Cal sticks with bend dont break and does not find a DE than be prepared to watch Syd and all the other DB;s get picked apart, you cannot give the QB 5-8 seconds to find an open guy, a DB cannot cover that long, and given Cals horrid Tacklking skills it usually leads to a lot of YAC. Since they do not look like they are going to pick up a Pass Rusher I would switch to the 3-4 we saw them play in the second half against AF, the strong part of the D is the LB’s lets watch Follet turn into Ware, or Merriman off the edge, remember last year he was the team leader in sacks at 5.5, what does that tell you about the DL.
22. Comment by Terry — January 2, 2008 @ 7:00 am #
Other stat to note:
Kevin Riley, with significant playing time in 2 games and a few pass attempts in a third this season is averaging a passer rating of 174.63 with a ridiculous high of 255.24 in the Armed Forces Bowl.
Nate Longshore’s average passer rating this season was only 123.32, with his HIGH being 170.45 (…less than Riley’s average…) in the loss to Washington.
In fact, in Riley’s worst performance, he had a rating of 144.99 against OSU. Longshore has only had two games with a higher passer rating than that: 163.73 against Tennessee, and 170.45 against Washington. Of course the 144.99 passer rating against OSU doesn’t reflect on that bone-head rookie mistake, however it is an interesting stat.
23. Comment by Steve — January 2, 2008 @ 12:16 pm #
As I pointed out on another blog site: I think Riley is clearly the QB of the future, everyone can see that. Injuries and stubborn loyalties ruined it for Longshore. Who I think is a quality guy and a great QB when he is healthy. But CLEARLY
24. Comment by Mitch — January 3, 2008 @ 4:25 pm #
CLEARLY the need on this team is for defensive pressure on opposing QB’s. How many of you saw West Virginia’s 3-3-5 defense overwhelm Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl. This to me is a powerful defensive set that a team (like Cal) heavy in LB talent and weak in D-Line talent can utilize with some real success. I thought WV really brought it to OU and they do not have a lineman like LSU’s Dorsey or USC’s Ellis. Watch for Gregory to experiment with the 3-3-5.
Go Bears!
25. Comment by Mitch — January 3, 2008 @ 4:30 pm #
Mitch I am with you compeletly on regards to the D, although I think the 3-3-5 better suits a team with Fast Dline men, as you pointed out we are so deep in the LB position with Felder, Follet and Worrell all coming back, not to forget Mohamed who I thought played solid off the bench, should adopted the 3-4 that is very effective for what most would consider the top two teams in the NFL NE, Dallas. Follet off one edge and Felder off the other would be unstopable, Follet certainly should play at the next level as that converted OLB, and Felder was a Frosh All-american. Point is I think they should play that 3-4 and at times drop into the 3-3-5, the issue with Cal playing the 3-3-5 is we will be losing to big hitting safetys in Decoud and Hampton, and Hicks could perhaps play that tweener role, or perhaps Conte but right now neither is big enough, Conte is only 190 and 6-3 he would have potential to grow into that position, other than that you would have to look at someone like Mohamed to perhaps take that role, but I am not sure about his coverage skills. But I do think the 3-4 is the way to go for Cal, especially since we have seen no attempt by the Coaching staff to go after a NFL quality pass rusher. You mentioned UWVa, but what I thought was more impressive was UGA against Hawaii they showed every Cal fan what a bend dont break can do to a throwing team, in the pass happy Pac-10 the Gregory Defense might in fact be the best D to win week in week out, it worked against Oregon, it has essentially kept USC from scoring more than 24 for the last 4 years, the Ayoob disaster not withstanding. But the key to that type of D is Pass rush, the Dawgs sacked Colt Brennan by only brining three and Four downed Lineman. The d works if you have the players to play it, it worked in 04 to perfection until the Holiday bowl, but again as I have said before 04 had a total of 37 sacks in 12 games that works out to 3 a game (Riddle had 14.5 sacks that year) this year 22, last year 26 and the year before 32 and the 03 team had 38. Of course you can easily predicate that the best Defensive teams for Cal were the ones in which they averaged over 3 sacks a game. I mean 22 sacks in 13 games is pathetic. So until the coaching staff commits to getting a Pass Rusher we need to move to the 3-4 to allow Follet who this year as he was last year our Sack leader to go after the QB.
26. Comment by Terry — January 3, 2008 @ 7:15 pm #
The 3-4 is an extremely difficult defense transition to from the 4-3. You can’t just come out with one less lineman and stick in one of your quality linebackers. First, you have to have a big strong nose tackle that can take on the center and the strong side guard. Not all big strong guys have the talent or physical attributes to do that. The perfect example is Warren Sapp who was a beast in the Tampa 2 which uses 4 down linemen. Sapp struggled mightily when the Raiders tried him at the nose. Second, you can’t just have any pair of defensive ends on the line. The have to be pretty hefty guys capable of taking on the interior linemen and sacrifice some pass rush to stuff the run. This frees up any of the 4 linebackers to pass rush.
On average, the linebackers in the 3-4 are also bigger in size than the linebackers in a 4-3. This is because they do have to deal with the O-line on a more consistent basis. The OLB’s have to be big enough to fight off O-Tackles and the ILB’s have to be able to shed the much larger interior linemen. Look at Dat Nguyen who played in both Mike Zimmer’s Dallas 4-3 and Parcells’ Dallas 3-4. He was a stellar player in the 4-3 but struggled with injuries that eventually lead to his retirement after the transition to the 3-4. Ray Lewis struggled with injuries and was glad to switch back to the 4-3/46 defense back in 2005.
My point is that a transition to the 3-4 takes time and serious commitment to recruiting players that fit the 3-4 defense. It’s also totally different in terms of assignments and not every defensive coordinator can make that adjustment easily. The 3-4 isn’t a personnel change like going to the nickel or dime defense. It’s a change of mentality, physicality, and philosophy. I agree that Cal needs some good linemen to apply pressure like Riddle, Carter, and Mebane used to do, but it’s probably a bit easier to recruit good athletes for your system rather than changing the system entirely.

A little off topic but I was wondering if anyone knew the status of UF transfer WR Nyan Boateng. I’m assuming he’s been practicing with the team this year but I know tedford suspended him because of a minor arrest in August. He looks like he could be a huge contributor next season on a team without many returning wideouts, and from what I heard he was planning on playing football and basketball at Cal.
28. Comment by Calman — January 3, 2008 @ 9:37 pm #
For the record, Terry, you are absolutely right about the Cal defense. They have been exposed badly this year because of a lack of a pass rush. It really doesn’t matter who you have playing DB if the QB has all day to throw.
29. Comment by Calman — January 3, 2008 @ 9:48 pm #
Great points regarding the 3-4 could not agree more, but perhaps looking at the roster as is, not to mention understanding the type of players we have. Follet is listed as 6’2 232, Williams 6’2 243, Felder 6’4 231 Mohamed is 6’4 220 and Charles Johnson the new JC transfer comes in at 6’2 223. Lets just look at the Cowboys, of course remembering that players are on average smaller and slower in College ball compared to the NFL, Akin Ayodele 6’2 250, Demarcus Ware 6’4 257, Bradie James 6’2 250 Greg Ellis 6’6 270 (of course Ellis was a pure DE out of UNC, and played that position until Dallas asked him to switch to the outside LB) Kevin Burnett who sees lots of playing time comes in at 6’3 240. So when we look from a pure physical look they are not that far off, they are roughly the same height, and the NFLers are about 20lbs heavier which is not untypical for guys to put that weight on after they get to the NFL. I would also point out that Cal might have a very good looking future Greg Ellis in Cameroon Jordan, at 6’5 265 he saw some playing time and although he was a true freshman he tallied the fifth most tackles by a DL men this year, granted that is not saying much. As for that strong nose tackle Mika Kane is coming back he is 6’3 305 after losing 30lbs last summer making him quicker off the ball, to look at the Cowboys Ratliff is 6’4 298, and Tank Johnson is 6’3 300, Alualu is 6’4 288 and could probably move inside if needed and be very physical. Also Rulon Davis at 6’5 275 has the height to play end, if he could keep from getting injured. Also one of the very few DL pick ups this year Trevor Guyton is 18 and 6’3 271. Now as to the finer points that you brought up, your right just because your big does not mean you play big, but by that logic just because your not big does not mean you cannot play big. Follet has lead the team two years in a row in Sacks, how coming off the edge just like he would in the 3-4. That is proven Talent. I do believe that Mika Kane has the ability to play big on the nose. But there is something else that must be brought up and that is the specific type of 3-4 they would most likely utilize, do you play the 2 gap that NE plays or the 1 gap that dallas plays, I think they would choose the 1 gap, for its easier to play, essentially you have your gap and that is it pin your ears back and go, in the 3-4 you could bring 4 or 5 guys on almost every play leaving 7-8 in coverage, the very fact that the blitz is coming from all over would only further confuse the O a lot more than our pathetic drop 8 and rush the four down and get no pressure. Will they likely adopt the 3-4 No, they played it in the second half against Air Force because it was easier to stop the option by spreading them out. Either way I think we both agree that until there is a more consistent pass rush it does not matter what Defense they play. And on that point it is one of my main criticisms of JT, why is he not able to land some big Defensive talent, great more WR, and again no DE’s its something that needs to be addressed.
30. Comment by Terry — January 3, 2008 @ 10:05 pm #
Excellent analysis Terry. I’m glad that there are some fans that actually know what they’re talking about. There are too many people out there that like to propose ridiculous ideas just because it worked against one particular team in one particular game. I agree that Cal might not adopt the 3-4 just because there isn’t enough talent in the college ranks to develop depth at key positions. Unfortunately, until Cal is a bit more successful recruiting top notch defensive linemen, the defense will suffer no matter how good the linebackers and secondary are and no matter what defensive system is used. We’ll see what the next season brings.

Did anyone catch the story about the WR coach and DB coach being fired, in particular the fact the WR coach was fired because the Recievers were not running the correct routes, yeah that is why Longshore was so bad in the fourth because Jordan Hawkins and Jackson were not running the correct routes, does that mean they just started running the correct ones when Riley was in. I smell patsys, both of these seem like scapegoat firings, the WR coach for Tedford not going to Riley, and the DB coach because Gregory could not get any pressure with the DL, I really want to believe that Tedford is the guy who will win the Rose Bowl for us, but sometimes I am left with puzzlement on my face for his inexplicable decisions.
